At the beginning of the academic year, there were some students who had to pay for their registration fee, whilst some institutions used their resources to cover these students. The University of South Africa (Unisa) has announced the new process that these students need to follow to receive their refunds.

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) revealed that a total of R47,3 billion was allocated to cover National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) funded students pursuing their studies at public TVET colleges and universities.

Some of these students had to use money from their own pocket for registrations, while some institutions assist students.

The University of South Africa (Unisa) has made an announcement of how students may apply the new Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) process for their refunds and student allowances.

Students have been advised to use the following steps:

  1. If you qualify for a refund and/or allowance, an email will be sent to your myLifeemail account, containing the relevant information along with a secure link to a site where the relevant banking details must be entered and submitted.
  2. After reading the email carefully, click on the link, enter your banking details and submit these. NB: Only your own, active bank account can be used. Payments to third-party accounts will not be processed. The account particulars will be verified against your ID number.
  3. The verification status of the details you have submitted will be displayed. This may not occur immediately – revisit the link until such time as the information is made available.
  4. If the bank account verification fails or is rejected, re-enter your banking details and make sure that they are correct.

Should students have any queries, they can be directed to the Unisa Directorate of Student Funding[email protected]. It is said that refunds can take up to 15 working days to be reflected in your account.

The university has also confirmed that Nsfas allowances will be processed twice a month, in the first and third week of each month.
