Nokwanda Mondlana wasn’t a top theory student at school, but she had a talent for IT which led to her fixing computers whenever she had the opportunity. While at school she followed her heart and changed subjects from Business to Computer Science and is now a first year student at WeThinkCode_. Nokwanda has found the perfect learning environment in which to turn her passion into a very marketable skill as a coder.
“Because of COVID-19 I got my General Educational Development (GED) certificate online, which is recognised as Grade 12 qualification equivalent in South Africa. I loved Graphic Design and tech at school, so when the chance to take the WeThinkCode_ online assessment came up, it was an opportunity for me to use my problem-solving skills.”
For Nokwanda, who is used to working on her own at home, working with other students at the WeThinkCode_ campus has been very different. She has found group learning a revelation, “I’m being helped by other people who can show me a quicker way to do things. Being at WeThinkCode_ also challenges my thinking about how to work and collaborate in a creative space.”
She has a clear vision for her future in mind, including wanting to do her internship at BBD Software Development, because of her interest in gaming and virtual reality. “I love to think out of the box and would like to pay it forward and help other kids to find practical ways to learn and study. Some of us are visual students and need to learn in a visual way, while others are theory students. WeThinkCode_ is giving me the opportunity to put my passion and talent to good use and with hard work I can see myself being a success!”
