Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women in South Africa and your likelihood of getting breast cancer increases as you get older. There are many ways that you can show your support like simply using the ‘#PinkOctober’ hashtag, breaking the stigma attached to breast cancer by encouraging your loved ones to frequently get tested by going for a mammogram.
The best way to beat cancer is with early detection so do not be afraid to consult a doctor if you fear that there might be something wrong. It is important to remember that men can suffer from cancer too. The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) is one of the top non profit organisations in the fight against cancer in the country.
Their goal is to educate the public by providing them with symptoms and research debunking misinformation. It offers a safe space and support to those who have been affected by cancer through therapy and medical assistance.
This organization relies on volunteers so if you are interested in receiving training to help those who have been afflicted by this disease, they are accepting volunteers. If not you can always head to their website cansa.org.za to offer a donation.
Daredevil Run
CANSA is hosting an event on the 15 October 2021 so if you are able to support it, please do. Men all throughout South Africa will be bravely running in their neighborhoods in purple speedos in groups no bigger than five to ensure covid protocols are still being adhered to.
Tickets to the Hollard Daredevil run 2021 cost R160 and the money goes directly to CANSA and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of South Africa. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men and testicular cancer has very high rates among young men aged 15-39.
Early detection is vital because you could have a 100% recovery for stage 1 testicular cancer. Entries close on the 8 October 2021 so follow the Daredevil page on Facebook to stay updated!
