South Africa's own superstar Tyla was on top form again as she received two awards at the annual BET Awards in Los Angeles, California on Sunday night.

It was a star-studded night as usual with global stars like Will Smith and Usher in attendance. Smith was on his best behaviour and didn't slap anyone. Rather he concentrated on performing his new single, You Can Make It for the superstar audience.

It was a good night for Joburg's Tyla who won in two of the four categories she was nominated in.

Tyla lost out on Best Female R&B/Pop Artist to superstar SZA and was also unsuccessful in the Viewers Choice Award where again she lost out to another superstar. This time it was Beyonce who won for her country hit Texas Hold Em.

Tyla's success came in the Best International Artist category. She beat off stiff competition from other African stars like Ayra Starr and Asake. There was also competition from the UK's Raye who recently topped the charts with a number of hits, including her colab with Stormzy, 'The Weekend'.

She was successful again in the Best New Artist category, claiming her second BET trophy.

Tyla is the first non-American to win Best New Artist at the and also first ever African to win two BET Awards in one night.

Other winners included Usher who won for Best Male R&B/Pop Artist and Killer Mike who's album Michael was awarded for Album of the Year.  Best Female R&B/Pop Artist went to SZA who was spending the weekend headling the UK's Glastonbury Festival.
