Energy and chemicals company Sasol is inviting applications for its Inspector In Training (NPE) Programme based in Secunda, Mpumalanga.
This exciting opportunity offers aspiring inspectors the chance to participate in a three-year accredited training programme that prepares candidates for careers in pressure equipment inspection, welding inspection and equipment integrity management.

About The Sasol Inspector In Training Programme
The Inspector In Training Programme is accredited by the Southern African Institute of Welding and provides extensive practical and theoretical training in the inspection of pressurised equipment and industrial assets.
The programme is designed for individuals who are detail-oriented, possess strong communication skills and have a passion for technical learning and engineering.
Successful candidates will gain exposure to equipment inspection, non-destructive testing, safety compliance and engineering standards while working in Sasol's industrial environment in Secunda.
What Does An Inspector Do?
The training programme prepares candidates for roles involving the inspection and certification of pressure equipment, steam generators and piping systems.
Inspectors play a critical role in ensuring equipment is safe, compliant and fit for continued operation.
Responsibilities include:
- Conducting equipment inspections
- Reviewing manufacturing and repair documentation
- Assessing compliance with engineering and safety standards
- Supporting risk-based inspection processes
- Evaluating equipment integrity and condition
- Assisting with certification and regulatory compliance activities
The role focuses heavily on safety, quality assurance and adherence to legal and ethical standards.
Training And Development Opportunities
Throughout the programme, trainees will learn to:
- Perform and evaluate visual inspections
- Conduct wall thickness measurements
- Perform magnetic particle testing
- Conduct dye penetrant testing
- Assist with inspections of pressure vessels, steam generators and piping systems
- Review and interpret radiographic inspection results
- Observe and assess pressure testing procedures
- Compile technical inspection reports
- Evaluate inspection findings and recommend corrective actions
- Participate in risk-based inspection assessments
- Support the management of inspection schedules and integrity risks
- Assist with the control of non-conforming products
- Apply industry procedures and technical work instructions
Trainees will also gain exposure to advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) technologies, including:
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
- Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD)
- Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT)
- Internal Rotary Inspection System (IRIS)
- Eddy Current Testing
- Guided Ultrasonic Testing (GUL)
- Conventional and Computed Radiography (X-rays)
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for the Sasol Inspector In Training Programme, applicants must have:
- Grade 12 (Matric)
- A minimum of 50% in:
- Pure Mathematics
- Physical Science
- English
Applicants who have completed an S4 qualification in one of the following fields may have an added advantage:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Metallurgical Engineering
- Welding Engineering
A valid driver's licence is desirable but not compulsory.
