The South African Department of Employment and Labour is introduce and enforce policies that promote fair labour practices and stimulate job creation. It was previously known more simply as the Department of Labour.  Its mission centers on creating a dynamic and equitable labour market by overseeing employer-employee relationships, developing and enforcing relevant legislation, and ensuring compliance with established labour standards.

The department provides a wide range of services that support both workers and employers. It is responsibsle for enforcing labour laws, ensuring safe and healthy working conditions through strict occupational health and safety standards, and overseeing the implementation of employment equity policies. Additionally, the department is responsible for the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) which provides a free service to employees who have disputes with their employer.

The legislation that the Department of Employment and Labour is responsible for includes the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, Industrial Relations Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Skills Development Act and the Employment Equity Act.
