CSIR Communications Internship 2026 (18-Month Contract) – Apply Now

The CSIR is inviting applications for its Communications Internship Programme. This 18-month contract opportunity is based in Johannesburg and offers graduates valuable workplace experience within one of South Africa’s leading scientific and technology research institutions.

The CSIR conducts research, develops and localises technology, and drives innovation to support industrial development and socio-economic growth in South Africa.

About the CSIR Communications Internship

This internship opportunity is hosted within the Mandela Mining Precint (MMP), which forms part of the CSIR Business Excellence and Integration portfolio.

The programme is designed to give graduates hands-on experience in communications within a research and innovation environment. Interns will work alongside researchers, engineers and cross-functional teams while contributing to strategic communication initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Under supervision, the Communications Intern will:

• Monitor social media platforms and support the implementation of social media strategies
• Develop and prepare content for various MMP communication platforms
• Assist with website management, including WordPress updates
• Contribute to messaging for brochures, posters and promotional material
• Provide ad-hoc photography support
• Assist with organising exhibitions
• Support the planning and execution of internal and external events

Minimum Qualifications and Skills

Applicants must have:

• A Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, Communication or Media Studies
• Knowledge of social media management and website administration (especially WordPress)
• Strong writing and word-processing skills
• Basic knowledge of digital media tools for video, design and multimedia content creation
• Computer literacy in MS Office
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Additional skills and attributes include:

• Photography skills
• Good time management and administrative skills (minute-taking, filing, research)
• Strong interpersonal and teamwork abilities
• Analytical and problem-solving skills
• Attention to detail
• Ability to work under pressure
• Proactive, self-motivated and results-driven mindset
