Is Plumbing A Good Career Choice?

Plumbers work on the systems that make our lives comfortable, from the water that comes out of our faucets to the heating and cooling systems in our homes. In fact, their work goes well beyond the pipes that we can see - they also work with sewer lines, septic tanks, water heaters, and other hidden sources of problems.

People may think of plumbers as the people who come out to fix clogged drains or burst pipes, but the work isn't limited to those situations.

Plumbing is a trade that involves installing and repairing pipes and fixtures that carry water, gas, or other fluids in homes and businesses. It is a trade that requires a lot of skill and training. Plumbers also maintain plumbing fixtures like bathtubs and toilets, as well as appliances like dishwashers and heating systems. Plumbers are in short supply relative to the demand for their services, which is why this jobs is projected to grow over the next decade.

Plumbing job opportunities are expected to be good because residential construction will continue to be strong, with more homes being built. Also, many commercial buildings are being renovated or expanded. And growth in the economy will lead to more business start-ups and expansions by existing companies - all of which will need plumbing service help.

Plumbers are responsible for a lot of different kinds of work, including:

  1. installing, repairing and maintaining pipes in a variety of buildings;
  2. repairing and replacing sinks, bathtubs and toilets; and
  3. servicing water heaters, dishwashers, garbage disposals, air conditioning units, furnaces and other appliances.

Most plumbers work full-time for building contractors or plumbing supply companies. Their schedules vary depending on their employers' needs. Some even travel to perform maintenance at remote facilities. Others are self-employed professionals who contract out their services to building contractors or private consumers. They may work evenings or weekends on emergency calls and may have irregular hours when plumbers on call are needed.

Plumbers can earn good salaries if they have several years of experience under their belts.

Even though the number of job openings is expected to grow through 2024, there will still be competition for those positions - plumbers who have the right education, training and certifications can expect even more opportunities and higher pay in their future.
