Everything You Need To Know About The SAPS Internship

The South African Police Service recruits entry-level police trainees in the Basic Police Development Learning Programme. Here's all you need to know about the internship on offer in the police force.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) is the national police force of the Republic of South Africa. The role of the SAPS is to prevent and combat anything that may threaten the safety and security of any community, investigate crimes, ensure offenders are brought to justice and participate in efforts to address the root causes of crime. 

Applicants that are young, energetic, intelligent, physically and mentally fit and of any race and gender are encouraged to apply to undergo training for enlistment within the Basic Police Development Learning Programme (BPDLP). Selected applicants will train for a period of twenty-one months.

To apply for an internship with the SAPS, the following is required:

  • Be a South African citizen 
  • Be in possession of Grade 12/Senior Certificate (of which documentary proof must be provided)
  • Be proficient in English and at least one other official language 
  • Be aged between 18 and 30 years of age (on the closing date of advertisement)
  • Have no previous criminal convictions and shall allow for fingerprints to be taken and background checked 
  • Not have any tattoos that are visible and irreconcilable with the objectives of the Service 
  • Be prepared to take the oath
  • Body mass index of less than 30 (circumference of < = 102 cm (males) and < = 88 cm (females)
  • Undergo and pass a medical exam
  • Complete and pass a physical fitness test 
  • Undergo and pass a Psychological and Integrity assessment as determined by the National Commissioner and be found to comply with the profile of a police official
  • Be prepared to successfully undergo such training as determined by the National Commissioner 
  • Be prepared to serve and be trained anywhere in the Republic of South Africa 

A few advantages include: 

  • A valid driver's license 
  • An aggregate of 4 and above for English in the final Grade 12 / Senior Certificate examination 
  • A fully completed three year National Diploma / Degree (at least an NQF 6 or higher value) 

Please note: Applicants who served previously in a Government Department and were dismissed as a result of misconduct will not be considered for appointment in the SAPS.
