For many students, graduates or young adults the thought of attending or going back to college while having a full-time job can be daunting. Having a full-time career and studying at the same time requires a high level of planning and prioritising skills.

Working full-time and studying is not for everyone but on the other hand, there is a majority that would consider balancing a job whilst furthering their education.

Many students often question if working and studying is a good idea. However, there are many benefits that come with having a job and studying at the same time.

It gives students the confidence they need as it allows them to be in complete control of their finances. At the same time, the qualification that you are pursuing will give you a good head start in developing your career.

The benefits of working whilst studying include:

  • Students will earn an income
  • Provides students with a sense of independence and maturity
  • Nurturing your soft skills
  • Gaining valuable work experience at a early age
  • Making valuable connections and relationships
  • Provides you with a head start in the job market
  • You may potentially discover your dream career path

Tips on how to balance your work-life and studies:

Create a plan:
At the start of each semester students will receive their academic schedule which outlines what will be covered for the year. Highlight all the important dates of assignments and exams for each subject. Likewise, ensure that you are highlighting any company meetings or work deadlines to avoid clashing with your studies. Create a schedule that will work best for you and ensure that there is a balance between the two.

Inform your employer:
It is important that from the start you inform your employer that you are studying so they are aware of it. Always try to reassure your employer that you are able to manage your work priorities. This shows that you are eager to work and broaden your expertise and shows them that you are serious about your job.

Use your free-time wisely:
Working and studying at the same time may seem as though there is no free time at all. By using your time constructively, it will help you balance your job and studies more effectively.
For example, during your lunch break you can make your notes or read through a chapter of your course material.

Take care of yourself:
Having a full-time job and studying is not for the faint-hearted. It will inevitably cause you to stress out once in a while. Therefore, finding coping mechanisms to positively deal with stress will help you maintain a healthy balance between the two.
For example, reading, listening to music, exercising or writing is a good way to reduce stress.

Reward yourself:
It is important to reward yourself every now and then when you have accomplished your goals that you have set out for yourself. This will help keep you motivated and give you something to look forward to. Studying while working is achievable only if you plan your life accordingly and you can enjoy the life balance it brings.

In order for students to reap the benefits of working while studying, you need to have the right attitude and approach. You need to take the necessary precautionary measures to ensure that you do not fall behind with studies nor affect your future success.
