The military is a great way to spend four years. You'll make friends, learn skills and get an education. But there are some things you need to know. The military doesn't teach you everything it takes to be a civilian.

Some of the most important skills – like how to write a resume or fill out an application – you'll have to figure out on your own. So start preparing early if you're thinking about joining the military.

  • Physical training is an essential part of your day
  • Do you own research about what your role/duty entails
  • You can't just quit once you feel like the military is no longer for you. If you are no longer up for it, you have to wait until your contract expires.
  • You can't get out for medical reasons
  • Always remember why you joined when things seem tough
  • You can say no to military positions offered to you if you are certain you would like to work in a specific role
  • Get use to being away from your family for periods of time if need be
  • Don't join the military because it looks like "fun" and you'll look good in the uniform
  • You need to be very disciplined and avoid trouble at all cost
  • Disclose all health conditions beforehand to avoid getting serious injuries
  • Be structured and serious - the military is not for the soft hearted
  • Learn to eat quickly as meal time is short
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Everybody's experience will be different
  • You'll mature as a person because of the responsibilities you'll be assigned
  • You'll learn plenty of valuable life skills
  • You need to look presentable and neat at all times when in your uniform

These are just a few of the essentials you need to know, and there are many other factors you may need to consider.
