A trade test is an assessment which is used to identify, gather and interpret information against the required competencies in a qualification or a part qualification in order to make a judgement about a learner's achievement.

In order to become a qualified mechanic a learner must first complete their occupational qualification, which meets the standards and requirements set out by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO).

They will then be eligible to write a trade test.

The trade test can be completed at any accredited Trade Test Centre by an assessor who is registered with the National Artisan Moderating Body (NAMB).

The trade test may entail testing on the skills, competencies and knowledge that the artisan acquired while getting their occupational qualification. The test includes theoretical and practical components.

Once you have passed the trade test you will receive certification which acknowledges you as a qualified mechanic.

This certificate will be required by employers before they employ you and allow you to do work at a certain level.

Learners will be allowed three attempts at a trade test, if they do not pass the test after all three attempts then they will be referred for recognition of prior learning in order to address the gaps in their knowledge.
