A trade test is the final summative assessment for those who have completed an artisan programme for a listed trade. Trade tests can be done at an accredited Trade Test Centre by an Assessor who is registered with the National Artisan Moderating Body.
The test is done after completion of an artisan course at a registered Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College or private service provider. During the test, individuals are tested on the knowledge, skills and competencies they have acquired while learning their trade.
A trade test consists of theoretical and practical demonstrations of their knowledge and skill. In preparation for the test, individuals may do the following:
- Review the theoretical work they have learnt and try to memorise the information.
- Answer practice questions.
- Employ the active recall study method.
- Practice practical skills.
The active recall study method requires individuals to familiarise themselves with the content they wish to learn. Then putting everything away and force themselves to remember what they have just read.
It allows them to see how much they actually remember and strengthens their memory. This study method may be applied to retain the theory learnt.
Those who pass the trade test will receive a certificate which is needed to be considered as a qualified tradesman. Those who do not pass will get another chance to retake the test.

Individuals who wish to apply for the trade test will need to ensure that they meet the basic criteria to qualify. The criteria may be found in the Trade Test Regulations, 2014, Skills Development Act, 1998.
