A carpenter is an artisan who has a skilled trade and a craft in which the primary work is to saw, shape, fit and erect wooden frameworks, roof timbers and boarding for the construction of and fitting out of buildings. 

These artisans are required to take a trade test to become certified, and this test is designed to ensure that the carpenter has all the necessary skills and knowledge to perform the job safely and efficiently. 

A trade test for carpentry typically involves both a practical and theoretical examination. The practical test usually requires the candidate to demonstrate their skills in various carpentry techniques, such as measuring and cutting wood, shaping and joining wood pieces, and installing fixtures such as doors, windows, and cabinets. 

Whilst the theoretical test assesses the candidate's knowledge of carpentry tools and materials, safety procedures, and building codes and regulations. 

The trade test is usually conducted by the Department of Higher Education and Training or by one of its accredited service providers across the country.

However, some trade test centres are run by private training providers, while others are run by employers or industry bodies. 

It's important to ensure that the trade test centre you choose is reputable and accredited to ensure that your certification is recognized by employers and industry bodies.

Once the carpenter has passed the trade test, they will be provided with a certificate of competency, which is required to legally work as a carpenter in South Africa.
