Most, if not all, modern businesses rely heavily on computerized technology to effectively operate at optimum efficiency.

This can include simple word processing using software like Microsoft Word, more complex engineering software such as AutoCAD, and the ability to write code using software such as Visual Studio Code.

Learning exactly how to use the computer to the best of your abilities has grown ever more essential in recent times. For example, most creative industries require you to have knowledge on the software used to make art, this can include Adobe Photoshop (for graphic design and photography), Adobe Premier (for videography and video editing), and FL Studio (music production).

If you intend to work in an office environment, you will still need to know how to use a computer as you will more than likely be using the Microsoft Office suite of applications. Another great reason to have computer skills is communication. During business (or personal life) you are going to need to communicate with your employees, with suppliers, with stakeholders, etc.

A computer allows you to communicate with anyone across the globe near instantly. This also includes having the proper email etiquette to communicate effectively. Some of the most basic computer software you need to be able to use are:

  • Microsoft Word (for word processing)
  • Microsoft Excel (for working with spreadsheets)
  • Microsoft PowerPoint (for working with presentations)
  • Microsoft Outlook (for working with e-mails)

While there are thousands of programs you can use, these four are the most basic programs that you will be using.

While having the skills to be able to operate in an office environment is essential, you can really spice up your resume if you have more specialized skills and knowledge. As the fourth industrial revolution draws closer, the demand for more computerized skills will also increase. In the briefest of explanation, the fourth industrial revolution is a rapid change in technology which will impact industry with more automation involving advanced robotics, artificial intelligence, interconnectivity and decentralization. All of which, requires personnel with the necessary skills, talent and knowledge to effectively operate various forms of computer skills.
