What is Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator?

Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator is a non-profit organisation that connects young people to job opportunities, skills training, and work readiness programmes. It plays a crucial role in addressing youth unemployment in South Africa by working with both young jobseekers and employers to bridge the gap between first-time work seekers and the labour market.

What Harambee Offers

Harambee provides a range of services and support to help young South Africans find and succeed in work:

  • Free Online Resources – Jobseekers can register on the SAYouth.mobi platform (powered by Harambee) to access job listings, training opportunities, and guidance on writing CVs and preparing for interviews.
  • Work Readiness Training – Candidates can receive training in workplace behaviour, digital skills, communication, and problem-solving to help them prepare for the world of work.
  • Connection to Employers – Harambee works with companies across various sectors to match candidates to available entry-level jobs, internships, and learnerships.
  • Support Services – The organisation offers ongoing mentorship and guidance to help young people stay employed and grow their careers.

Who Can Join Harambee?

To qualify for Harambee’s services, you usually need to meet the following criteria:

  • Be aged 18–34 years old
  • Be a South African citizen
  • Be unemployed and not studying full-time
  • Have a Grade 10, 11 or 12 certificate, or some post-school qualification
  • Have no or limited work experience

How to Register with Harambee

You can register for free on the SAYouth.mobi network, which is mobile-friendly and does not use any data. Once registered, you can apply for opportunities, receive job alerts, and access training content.

Partnerships and Impact

Harambee partners with government, private companies, and other organisations to help reduce youth unemployment. It played a key role in helping set up the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention and continues to drive inclusive hiring models through initiatives like the YES Programme and the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI).

Why Harambee Matters

With South Africa’s high youth unemployment rate, Harambee helps level the playing field by supporting young people who face barriers to employment. It has helped hundreds of thousands of young South Africans find their first job, earn an income, and build a future.

South Africa’s unemployment rate is the highest in the world, at 33%. For young people, the figure is even higher, with some estimates putting the number at 71%. Education is the foot in the door for many but when even graduates struggle to find jobs, it is clear that not just any degree will do and students need to be careful about the study choices they make.

It's time for the South African youth to consider alternative ways of seeking and keeping employment. This appears to be the case as it seems more of the country's youth is unable to secure employment.
