The distance learning Advanced Diploma in Dermal Aesthetics NQF Level 7 offers specialised training in advanced treatments, an accredited Programme exclusively offered at Isa Carstens® Academy.
Starting with the right qualification is crucial
Somatology is the pathway to becoming an Advanced Aesthetic Therapist, starting with a 3-year Diploma in Somatology at NQF Level 6; the only qualification that grant automatic access to the Advanced Diploma in Dermal Aesthetics programme.
Somatology focuses on the scientific study of the human body, especially the skin. Higher Education is different to skills-based training, enhancing problem-solving and critical thinking capabilities that are essential for a career in Medical Aesthetics.
While international certification like ITEC and CIDESCO are fantastic additions, they do not meet South Africa's higher education entry requirements. A list of registered institutions and accredited courses is available from the Department of Higher Education for anyone to do their due diligence.
Theoretical subjects such as Anatomy & Physiology, Biotics, Nutrition, Cosmetic Science, Research Principles & Academic Writing, and Business Practice—including management and planning—ensure that graduates are not only skilled therapists but also well-prepared for the business world.
Application and Admissions
Online applications for 2025 are now open. Provisional acceptance is based on Grade 11 results, for those in matric. To finally register for a Diploma in Somatology, the requirement is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) from the South African Matriculation Board with an endorsement from the board certifying that you are eligible for Diploma study at a tertiary institution.
Preference will be given to students who have achieved an Admission Point Score (APS) in excess of 24 excluding Life Orientation.
