Gender-Based violence refers to harmful acts directed at an individual based on their gender. Gender Based Violence is a serious human rights violation.

These are the 6 types of Gender Based Violence:

  • Violence against women and girls (VAWG)
  • Violence against LGBTI people.
  • Intimate partner violence (IPV)
  • Domestic violence (DV)
  • Sexual violence (SV)
  • Indirect (structural) violence.

The 16 Days Of Activism campaign aims to curb the scourge of violence against women and children. The lives of women and children remain at risk regardless of where they find themselves including at South Africa's universities and TVET Colleges. 


A lot of work needs to be done if university and TVET campuses are to be considered safe. The development of robust policies and improved security protocols is at the centre of the Higher Education Department's plan to improve campus safety.


Gender-Based Violence continues to plague institutions of higher education in South Africa. This comes after it was revealed that 10% of all rape cases that are reported to the police stem from institutions of higher learning.

 


Over the next few weeks, thousands of students will enrol in institutions of higher learning as the 2023 academic year gets underway. The minister of higher education is confident that the sector is ready for the administration of the 2023 academic year.
