Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting computer systems, networks, and data from digital threats such as unauthorised access, theft, damage, or disruption. It encompasses a broad range of disciplines—from safeguarding an organisation’s network perimeter and cloud environments to securing applications, endpoints, and even the human users themselves.
Because of the field’s diversity, cybersecurity offers a range of career pathways. Early-career roles include Security Analyst, who monitors alerts, investigates suspicious events, and maintains security tools; and Incident Responder, who leads the containment and recovery process when a breach occurs. Penetration Testers (or ethical hackers) specialise in simulating attacks to uncover vulnerabilities, while Vulnerability Assessors focus on scanning and prioritising security weaknesses.
On the technical side, Security Engineers architect and implement protective measures—such as secure network designs or identity-and-access-management systems—whereas DevSecOps Engineers integrate security into application development pipelines.
For those interested in policy, Security Architects define enterprise-wide security strategies, and Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) Specialists ensure that organisations adhere to regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
