What is Sassa's new biometric identification initiative?

Answer

Sassa has implemented a new biometric identity verification system to enhance the security of social grant distribution. This initiative aims to curb the risk of social grant fraud and to safeguard Sassa and it's clients against fraud.

The new biometric identity verification is intended for the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, also known as the R370 grant.

The verification process if currently primarily aimed at the following SRD grant recipients:

  • Clients who wish to modify their existing mobile numbers initially provided to Sassa. These changes will be accepted once the biometric verification is completed successfully.
  • Clients whose records were flagged as possible victims or perpetrators of identity theft that will also be required to undergo biometric identification to confirm the legitimacy of their applications.

Biometric verification, especially facial recognition, ensures only authorised individuals can access client records, reducing identity theft and fraudulent payments.

Should clients not complete the biometric identification, their Sassa SRD grant payments could be suspended.
