The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is a South African government agency responsible for investigating misconduct and criminal offences committed by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and municipal police services.

Primary Role and Mandate

IPID operates independently from the police and plays a key role in ensuring accountability, transparency, and justice within law enforcement agencies. Its mandate is set out in the IPID Act (Act No. 1 of 2011), which came into effect in April 2012.

What Does IPID Investigate?

IPID focuses on serious allegations involving police officers, including:

  •     Deaths in police custody or as a result of police action
  •     Rape by a police officer (whether on- or off-duty)
  •     Rape of a person in police custody
  •     Torture or assault by police officials
  •     Corruption and other criminal offences by members of SAPS or municipal police
  •     Discharge of an official firearm by a police officer
  •     Allegations of systemic abuse or failure to act on complaints

How It Works

  •     Once a case is reported, IPID conducts an independent investigation.
  •     Findings are submitted to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for decision-making on prosecution.
  •     The police service is obligated by law to cooperate with IPID investigations and take disciplinary action based on IPID’s recommendations.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is now accepting applications for both its 18 and 24-month internship programmes that are available in all provinces.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has opportunities for TVET Students to complete their Work-in-Learning with them once they have complete the Safety in Society course.
