When comparing a social worker and psychologist it is important to note that they both work in the human services fields even though they have distinct differences.

Both professions exist to improve the lives of disadvantaged members of society through the delivery of essential social services. It is also crucial that we understand what the two professions entail in order to understand the difference between them.

Social Worker

Social workers look to enhance the well-being of people and the communities they live in. They focus on individuals that are oppressed and are deprived of strength or vitality.

Social workers deal with a variety of problems which include substance abuse, child welfare, schools, elderly, community or rural oppression as well as others. The clients of social workers usually have unique needs which require that they have them to adapt to the situation and come up with a treatment plan.

Psychologists

Psychologists often work with a medical team in order to help a patient with a mental health illness. Psychologists use their understanding of the mind to develop and implement treatments that will help their patients overcome their mental illnesses.

A psychologist could also work independently and have their own patients where they will conduct their own research and develop programs to help increase the understanding of their patients.

What's the difference between the two?

Social workers contribute to the human services sector by providing solutions to the social, behavioural, economic or health problems faced by their clients. A social worker's main goal is to help people in difficult situations overcome their problems.

Psychologists focus their efforts specifically on helping their patients address potentially damaging mental health issues. A psychologist will study their client's minds, normal behavioural activities and abnormal behavioural activities in order to diagnose and treat their clients.
