Applications Open for the 2027 CSIR-Sasol Foundation Bursary Programme
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), in partnership with the Sasol Foundation, is offering a comprehensive bursary programme for the 2027 academic year. This initiative aims to support full-time, unemployed students pursuing qualifications in priority fields within science, engineering, and technology.
Who Should Apply?
The bursary targets academically deserving South African youth, with a strong focus on empowering women, black students, and people with disabilities. The programme supports studies in key STEM areas that align with the CSIR’s research priorities.

- Aeronautical Engineering
- Mechatronic Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Computer Engineering
- Electronic Engineering
- Computer Science
- Chemical Engineering
Eligibility Criteria
For Current Grade 12 Learners:
- Must be a South African citizen
- Intend to study full-time at a South African public university in 2026
- Minimum subject marks: English (Level 5), Mathematics (Level 6), Physical Science (Level 6)
For Current University Students:
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must plan to register full-time at a South African university in 2026
- Must have passed all current university courses to date
What the Bursary Covers:
This is a full-cost bursary that includes:
- Registration and tuition fees
- Prescribed textbooks
- Accommodation
- Living allowance
- Once-off laptop allowance
Additional Benefits:
- Non-financial support such as wrap-around support services
- Opportunities for vacation work to gain practical experience
Bursary Conditions:
Successful applicants are required to work back one year for each year of funding received through the CSIR and Sasol Foundation.
