PRASA stands for the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa.
It is a state-owned enterprise responsible for most of South Africa’s passenger rail services. PRASA was established in 2009, when the South African government consolidated several rail and public transport services into a single entity to better manage and improve commuter rail operations in the country.
What PRASA Does:
- Operates commuter trains (through its division called Metrorail) in major cities like Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, and Durban.
- Manages long-distance rail services (through its division called Shosholoza Meyl) connecting different provinces.
- Oversees intermodal transport systems, combining rail, bus, and taxi services for integrated public transport.
- Owns and maintains rail infrastructure such as stations, tracks, and rolling stock (trains).
- Develops rail modernization projects, like the rollout of new electric commuter trains (the "People's Train" initiative).
PRASA’s Main Divisions:
- Metrorail: Provides daily commuter train services in major metropolitan areas.
- Shosholoza Meyl: Offers long-distance passenger train travel between cities.
- Autopax: A bus service operating under brands like City to City and Translux, often complementing PRASA's rail network.
- Intersite: A division that manages PRASA’s commercial property and real estate interests, mainly around stations.
