Overview of the South African Department of Electricity and Energy

The Department of Electricity and Energy (DEE) is a national government department responsible for overseeing South Africa’s electricity and broader energy system. It was established to sharpen the country’s focus on resolving the electricity crisis, strengthening energy security and accelerating the transition to a more reliable and sustainable energy mix.

Core Responsibilities

The department is primarily responsible for electricity planning, generation, transmission and distribution policy. This includes ensuring security of supply, reducing load shedding, expanding electricity access and supporting infrastructure development across the country.

The DEE also oversees key entities in the electricity sector, most notably Eskom, and works closely with energy regulators and municipalities to improve governance, efficiency and financial sustainability within the sector.

Energy Transition and Reform

A major focus of the department is South Africa’s energy transition. This involves enabling greater private-sector participation, supporting renewable energy projects such as solar and wind power, and reducing reliance on coal while balancing economic and social considerations.

The department plays a central role in implementing electricity market reforms, including the unbundling of Eskom and the development of a more competitive electricity market.

Policy and Planning

The Department of Electricity and Energy leads national electricity planning through instruments such as the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). It also contributes to long-term energy strategies that support economic growth, job creation and climate commitments.

Overall Role

In summary, the Department of Electricity and Energy is a key driver of South Africa’s efforts to stabilise the power supply, modernise the electricity sector and build a resilient, inclusive and sustainable energy system that supports development and improves quality of life.

The Department of Electricity and Energy is recruiting now for the internships, which pay R7860 per month.
