In the age of automation and AI, authentic human creativity is taking centre stage. According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the creative economy is recognised as a tool of sustainable development. Dr Willie Bouwer, Head of School: Media and Design at JSE-listed higher education provider, STADIO, explains that the creative economy includes all the different aspects of the various creative industries, from graphic design to fashion, and media, among others. 


At the end of 2023, the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Education Research Report was released, and it found that only 55% of Grade 6 teachers could read for comprehension at a Grade 4 level. The report also found that 80% of Grade 6 mathematics learners were taught by teachers with subject knowledge below the level of the grade being taught.


Over 900,000 South African matriculants are currently writing their final National Senior Certificate exams, but according to the Council of Higher Education, more than half of these accomplished high school graduates won’t pursue higher education immediately after getting their results.
