Most parents are looking for safe school environments where their children can learn and thrive. But for many, the expectations go beyond academic scores and subject choices. Underlying these basics of what we expect from schooling, are deeper aspirations that include their child’s social and emotional development, as well as the hopes that through their educational and school community experiences, our children will find opportunities to discover, explore and hone their interests and aptitudes

With the help of Koa Academy Principal, Mark Anderon, let's look at how schools can better help prepare learners for university, from developing critical thinking skills to personal responsibility skills.

Koa Academy, South Africa’s leading high-engagement online school has announced that it is opening Koa Akademie in January 2025. The new Afrikaans home language virtual campus is a first for South Africa, offering Afrikaans-speaking families a unique choice when it comes to their children’s education.

The passion for STEM-education came into the spotlight at Koa Academy recently with the news that one of its Grade 9 learners, Matt Greenwood, was part of the winning team at the 2024 FIRST® Tech Challenge international competition. Alongside his South African teammates, the 15-year-old from Cape Town, joined more than 18 000 youths from 58 countries in Houston, Texas, USA for an exciting 4-day event that drew crowds of up to 50 000 people.

It is estimated that at least 10% of South African children have neuropsychological challenges. Neurodiversity, the range of different brain structures and chemistry which is found in the human population, includes people with autism as well as those with differences such as ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity), dyslexia, OCD (obsessive compulsive) and sensory integration issues.

South African EdTech start-up, Koa Academy has won the 2023 MEST Africa Challenge which was held in Accra, Ghana last week. The latest MEST Africa Challenge was a collaboration with ABSA Bank that aims to empower the next generation of African tech innovators.

In times of rapid, constant transformation and with unprecedented challenges that need urgent solutions, the demand for innovation and creative thinking skills in 21st Century workplaces has never been more pronounced.

The final exam season of the year is almost here, and it’s not unusual for a sense of dread to creep in.  It’s not just the learners who are under duress; exam time can be stressful for families and the school community.  Parents and teachers want to provide the right support, but it’s not always clear what that should be.

As a fellow school principal, I feel that it is important to join the conversation triggered by a report from some South African school leaders which was the topic of a series of articles published across major media outlets over the past weekend,  issuing a stark, sweeping warning to South Africa – that home/online schooling sets children back in their educational milestones.
