With 175 599 registered candidates set to write this year’s final matric exam in two days, the Department of Education in Gauteng says that it is well prepared for the upcoming exam, which will conclude on 6 December 2021.

The Head of Department, Edward Mosuwe says that this has been the biggest increase in candidates in the province since the introduction of the national senior certificate in 2008.

This translates to an increase of 17.55% from last where the total number of candidates was 149 385.

Mosuwe also clarified that out of that total number of candidates, only 132 887 are full-time learners with the remaining 47 712 being part-time learners.

He further stated that the department has also introduced a code of conduct that deals with cheating and leaking of exams.

This is a national exam and therefore we don’t want any problems, because one leak would compromise the whole country. So the signing of the pledge is one way through which we call on learners to know that we run exams with integrity and that the credibility of the National Senior certificate is of utmost importance.

Additionally, the department has accredited a total of 1004 examination centres where candidates will write their exam during this period.

Speaking on the issue of admissions for 2022, the HOD said that since Friday, 175 000 applications have been submitted. He that also pointed out that 75 000 parents were given offers and have accepted them.

I suspect that parents may still be mulling over which school to take. Remember any every applicant can select up to five schools of their choice and we will then place them in one.

He urged parents to accept as soon as they receive placement because there are other applicants in the system. The placement process is due to conclude on 30 November 2021 at which point parents will have received a confirmation SMS.
