Speaking at the TVET Curriculum Transformation and Innovation Summit held at Vodaworld Dome in Midrand on Tuesday, Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimand, highlighted the need for a collaborative effort between educational institutions and industries to align education with the evolving needs of the job market.
Fostering Industry-Responsive Curricula
Minister Nzimande emphasised the need for substantial industry engagement in the TVET curriculum review process to ensure that graduates are equipped with the skills and knowledge demanded by employers.
What is also critical is the need for more substantial industry involvement in the TVET curriculum review process to enhance responsiveness to industry needs and requirements.
He added that by fostering this collaboration, the goal is to improve the employability, productivity, and success rates of TVET graduates.
Addressing Challenges through Adaptive Strategies
The Minister highlighted that managing the evolving TVET curriculum demands a shift in management strategies to effectively address present and future challenges.
He also emphasised the importance of leadership development programs that will equip TVET sector leaders to drive the necessary curriculum changes.
Progress in Artisan Training
Acknowledging the progress made in building a robust TVET sector, the Minister revealed that South Africa currently produces around 20,000 qualified artisans annually. He stressed the intention to significantly increase this number to meet the National Development Plan (NDP) target of producing 30,000 qualified artisans each year by 2030.
He underscored the expansion of Centres for Specialisation across TVET colleges and the allocation of R68 million to establish 33 trade test centres, which have facilitated over 600 apprentices' trade testing, with over 500 qualifying as artisans.
Entrepreneurship and Innovation Integration
Nzimande highlighted the ongoing efforts to integrate entrepreneurship training into the TVET sector. He indicated that 26 colleges are actively engaged in entrepreneurial training through dedicated hubs, with plans to further expand entrepreneurship initiatives.
Additionally, through collaboration with the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), innovation hubs are set to be introduced in TVET colleges, further encouraging a spirit of innovation among students.
Placements and Future Commitments
Minister Nzimande showcased the department's commitment to facilitating placements for TVET graduates, having already opened 14,954 placement opportunities valued at R726 million. He further pledged to reach a target of 20,000 work placements for TVET graduates, aligning with President Cyril Ramaphosa's commitment outlined in this year's State of the Nation Address.
Embracing the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR)
The importance of aligning TVET programs with 21st-century demands was highlighted, particularly in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).
The Minister further announced the establishment of seven 4IR centres, supported by stakeholders including the Education, Training and Development Practices Sector Education and Training Authority (ETDP SETA), HUAWEI, Cisco, GIZ, and IYF. These centres aim to empower students and staff with digital skills that are essential in the contemporary job market.
Partnerships for Young Entrepreneurs
Acknowledging the role of external partners, Minister Nzimande expressed gratitude to organizations such as the Allan and Gill Gray Foundation and the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) for their contributions to nurturing young entrepreneurs. He highlighted the inspiring example of the Vhembe TVET College in Limpopo, which reported producing three millionaires through development initiatives.
The Summit's Focus
The three-day summit is centred around the theme "TVET curriculum transformation: a key to unlock skills development for the modern economy."
It aims to bring together stakeholders from the TVET sector to collectively address the challenges and opportunities associated with transforming and innovating the TVET curriculum, aligning it with the needs of the modern economy.
