The learner dropout rate in South African public schools led to the Basic Education Minister declaring it as a crisis. The Zero Dropout Campaign has been advocating for strategies to keep learners at school, as President Cyril Ramaphosa encouraged in the National Teachers Award Ceremony last week.

The education sector crisis in South Africa continues to worsen as more numbers of learners dropping out of school grow. The Covid-19 pandemic is reported to be the main cause of the overwhelming majority of learners dropping-out of schools.

NAPTOSA voiced their views on the recent research report by the Stellenbosch University’s Research on Socioeconomic Policy Group on the flow of learners through schools.

Covid-19 and the resulting National Lockdown has put an even brighter spotlight on school dropouts as the dropout rate in the country only gets worse. This comes at a time where learners returning to class full-time is being considered.
