South Africa’s climbing youth unemployment rate has long been an issue, but with the introduction of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative, some of these worries have been alleviated. The Department of Basic Education reports that since its implementation, the programme has yielded some positive outcomes.

Thousands of youth are now unemployed after it was revealed that their contracts will not be renewed by the basic education department. These youth are entitled to financial support from the Unemployment Insurance Fund.

One of South Africa’s biggest trade unions has questioned why an effective job creation mechanism is not being expanded. The programme has assisted in the reduction of youth unemployment in the country.

Thousands of former teaching assistants are being encouraged to apply for unemployment relief. This is because they meet the criteria needed to be eligible to receive unemployment relief from a government agency.

An announcement has recently been released encouraging all teacher assistants to go for training. The training provides teaching assistants with the opportunity to learn the necessary skills to be an asset to the school they are assisting at.

According to research, nearly half of the country’s publicly employed teachers are older than 50, which means that there will be a large number of teachers retiring between now and 2030. Here is what Professor Nick Spaull had to say.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) believes that teacher assistants should become a norm at public schools. Teacher assistants not only help the teachers in the classroom but also provide learners with extra assistance.

A significant number of young people were placed in three phases of government's teacher assistant. The department has called on these individuals to come forward to claim their Unemployment Insurance Fund.

Unemployed young people are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to join the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) and acquire essential skills for future employment. Applicants have a few more days to apply for the programme.

As part of the fourth phase of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative in the Basic Education Sector the Western Cape Education Department is currently recruiting over 20 000 Education Assistants for public and special schools.
