The Department has been battling with illegal schools for years, as these schools give learners false hope and fail to register them for exams. The stakes are high this year as learners prepare to write their final exams next week.

Part of Basic Education's budget is being used to bail out South African Airways. The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) is not pleased with the fact that the budget is being used to save State-Owned Enterprises at the expense of schools.

The budget for the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) will stay the same. This programme is responsible for feeding more than 9 million learners.

Earlier this year, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) launched an ePortal with a range of educational resources for learners to access at any time. Since its launch, the ePortal has not only been helping learners in the Western Cape, but learners in other provinces too. 


Spokesperson for the Department of Basic Education, Elijah Mhlanga said this year the department has the largest number of candidates who will sit to write the exam. More than 1 million candidates will be writing the exam.
