A new board and CEO have been appointed to handle the administration of NSFAS in the new year. The financial aid scheme has been under the administration of Dr Randall Carolissen and his team for two years. 


We've all been wondering about how far NSFAS is with providing students with laptops and I'm sure many have even given up hope. However, NSFAS is officially one step closer and the laptops are even closer to being delivered.


NSFAS made the decision to pull the funding from over 5000 students earlier this year. The financial aid scheme is now said to have reversed it for hundreds of students. NSFAS has received a lot of backlash following this action but is supported by the Minister.


The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are now calling for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to remove the Administrator from his position. They now claiming that the Administrator has turned the financial aid scheme into a 'mafia operation'.


NSFAS Administrator, Randall Carolissen, denied the claims against himself and NSFAS. Carolissen sat in front of the Portfolio Committee and delivered responses to all the allegations issued by the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union.


NSFAs showed up ready in front of Parliament for the second time to respond to allegations made by the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union Trade union (NEHAWU) against the organisation, many being against the Administrator, Dr Randall Carolissen. 


The Portfolio Committee of Higher Education are now concerned about the delays being presented in finalising the audit of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). They were recently briefed on the outcomes of the audit.

Solidarity Youth has sent a letter to NSFAS demanding that they pay students their outstanding fees and allowances. This comes after many students were informed that NSFAS will not be paying their fees which has now lead to lawyers giving the financial aid scheme two days to reverse this.


NSFAS has already nearing the 500 000 mark for applications received rom those wishing to have funding for the higher education studies in 2021. The Minister of Higher Education has congratulated the scheme on hitting this mark.


NSFAS application numbers will be higher during this application cycle than before due to Covid-19 greatly affecting South Africa's job sector and individuals' finances. NSFAS applications are currently open and will close on 30 November.
