Almost 900 Matric exam paper markers quit and had to be replaced in Gauteng just as the marking season commences. Marking began on 4 January and is set to finish up on 22 January with around 45 000 markers being recruited across the country.

NAPTOSA has said that there is a psosibility that markers could have withdrawn their duties. Marking of the 2020 matric exam papers commenced today as Matrics are expected to receive their results on 23 February.


The Gauteng Department of Education announced that late online registration admissions are now open for grade 1 and 8 learners. 


The Department of Basic Education recently presented the findings of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study 2019, this shows how South African learners have been faring in comparison to the rest of the world. 


During a briefing in Pretoria, Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, announced when the matric results will be released and spoke about the readiness of schools during the current pandemic.

The decision made by the Department of Basic Education and Umalusi to have all the matrics rewrite the two leaked exams was overturned by the high court in Pretoria. Which according to Mweli has caused the department "unprecedented crisis".

The Department of Basic Educations has issued a set of revised protocols for schools to follow for Matric exams. These protocols were released a few days into Matrics having already started exams and confused many around the country.


The new exam regulations for Matrics which were announced last minute has caused confusion and chaos across schools in the country, especially in the Western Cape. Government has now decided to release a detailed circular on the protocols to follow.
