Is marine biology a hard job? There are many myths and misconceptions about the life of marine biologists. Some people think that marine biologists spend all day in a swimming pool with dolphins, or that they get to go swimming with whales and sharks on a daily basis. While some of this may be true, there are also long days, travel to sometimes inconvenient places and frequently not enough income.


If you are currently in high school, beginning college, or somewhere in between, you may wonder what career path to take. It is important to choose a career that fits you and your personality. There are many careers that can be both interesting and rewarding, but not all will suit you equally well. The best way to find out if a career is right for you is to research it thoroughly, ask questions, and then make the decision based on everything you have learned. A group of Grade 12 pupils in the Western Cape will soon be writing Africa's first-ever matric paper on marine science. One of them went down her journey in studying the subject over the past three years.
