More than 20 schools have been closed in Gauteng on Friday due to a rapid rise in Covid-19 over the past 24 hours. This comes after the Gauteng Department of Education, Steve Mabona held a press briefing on Friday to give current data on the rising Covid-19 infection rate in the province


A principal was shot and killed at Buyani Primary School in Finetown, Gauteng on Monday morning. The Gauteng Department of Education addressed it 


The Department of Education in Gauteng says about 20 schools have been closed interchangeably between 1-3 days since February, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The province is experiencing the third wave of Covid infections.
 


After allegations of racism were brought against Cornwall Hill College during a peaceful protest, the SA Human Rights Commission has announced that an investigation into the school's policies and Code of Conduct as a means to intervene in the alleged ongoing discrimination will take place.

As we observe a National Lockdown, with everyone being at home more and constantly having to be safe and wash our hands, water usage has seen an increase. 


Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi has given an update about the schooling system as the province recently recorded the highest number of cases in South Africa.


Now that Gauteng has overtaken Western Cape as the epicentre of Covid-19 in the country, Government officials are now working to make sure the province is able to cope with the surge and have provided updates and plans Government has for the province. 


The Gauteng Health Department has signed the statute paving the way for the establishment of a single government-operated nursing college in the province known as the Gauteng College of Nursing (GCoN).


To be able to cope with the expected surge in Covid cases, Gauteng is now looking at an intermittent lockdown which would see the province have an on and off lockdown. 


There have been rumours circulating on social media about Bidvest receiving a tender to clean schools. Gauteng MEC for education and youth development, Panyaza Lesufi, has spoken out about the rumours. 


The application and placement process for the 2020 academic year for Grades 1 and 8 in Gauteng public schools has finally gone live.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) will open the online application system for Grade 1 and 8 learners on 16 April, and has provided a step-by-step guide on how to apply.
