The Covid-19 pandemic has had a considerably dire impact on the functioning of the Higher Education sector. As a result, many of the universities across the country had to adopt online learning, despite much of the country's households having no access to internet connectivity.


Although the South African Union of Students welcomed the Higher Education Minister's recent speech, the union says there are a number of issues that remain unattended. Careers Portal caught up with SAUS Secretary, Lukhanyo Daweti, to get a sense of where the sector needs to make improvements including within NSFAS. 


The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) was established in 2009 when the former Department of Education was divided into two sections: Basic Education and Higher Education and Training.
