Although the South African Union of Students welcomed the Higher Education Minister's recent speech, the union says there are a number of issues that remain unattended. Careers Portal caught up with SAUS Secretary, Lukhanyo Daweti, to get a sense of where the sector needs to make improvements including within NSFAS. 


Minister Blade Nzimande appeals to all university students who will remain behind on-campus accommodation residences to act responsibly as the country faces a third wave. This week, the Minister addresses many changes within the higher education sector due to Level 4 lockdown.

After President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that all in-person classes and experimental learning activities should end on Wednesday, Universities around the country have had to make plans. These plans outline if and how learning and teaching will continue under level 4 lockdown.


Higher Education, Science and Innovation Minister Blade Nzimande says the development of a policy framework for the regulation of university fees is underway to ensure that fees are kept at affordable levels for all families that need assistance.

The College of Cape Town Management team has released a statement on how NSFAS funding will be allocated to all eligible students for the year 2021. They've also given answers to how much NSFAS beneficiaries will receive as allowances.

Unisa has still not enrolled the 20 000 students after being denied the option to cut down on their enrolment for 2021. A court ruling has been sent to the University to address many of Unisa's current issues, but the universities has said to be filing for an appeal. 


Minister Blade Nzimade ploughs billions into university infrastructure and is working on investments for TVET colleges. He also makes it clear that though infrastructure is his main focus he also intends on focusing on other things that will benefit universities and TVET colleges. 


After Minister Blade Nzimande announces that he is working on a task team and says 'there is no free education for all', a Professor from Stellenbosch University comes to believe that there is a sustainable solution for the issue of free education, and a task team is not part of the solution.

Part-time employment is aimed at different people, especially students. Students working a part-time job can bring a great sense of independence, increase their self-esteem and accountability. This too provides students with an opportunity to utilize their practical skills and gain experience that universities/ colleges would not be able to teach you.
