COVID Grant Extension Is A Lifeline For Asylum Seekers

In June, GroundUp wrote an article about immigrant tradesmen who were struggling to find work during lockdown. Many asylum seekers and citizens of Lesotho, Angola and Zimbabwe with special permits have lost their income and have only been able to apply for COVID-19 relief grants since August.

The second wave of the Covid-19 relief fund applications are now ready to be rolled out from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. R65,7 million was paid during the first wave and now a further R77 million is being set aside for the relief fund's second round. 

UIF has extended their Temporary Employers/Employees Relief Scheme (TERS) which will see beneficiaries receive funds for a longer period of time.
