A study was conducted using UNICEF South Africa’s free U-Report SMS platform which revealed that only 55% of young people in the country are willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.


A new surveillance report on children under the age of 19 has revealed that the opening and closing of schools has not affected the COVID-19 cases in any way. This suggests that schools are not the main contributors to the waves of the virus.


The Department of Basic Education released a statement that revealed how many school staff were vaccinated in two days. They stated that in the last two days, over 105 000 teachers and school staff have been vaccinated in South Africa.


The Nelson Mandela University was approved by the Eastern Cape department of health as a master facility Covid-19 vaccination site and started participating in the national vaccine rollout programme on Monday. 


The South African Health Department says that 300 000 vaccine doses have arrived in the country for teachers. Unions say that 75% of teachers in the country are willing to take the vaccine. 


Up to 582 000 teachers and other school staff will be vaccinated in an ambitious programme to by launched by the Basic Education Department this week. The Minister has given details of who will be vaccinated, and when.
