Congress of South African Trade Unions known as COSATU was founded in 1985 and is one of the largest trade unions in South Africa. National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), the National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU), the Police Prisons and Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) and the Chemical Energy Print Paper and Allied Workers Union (CEPPWAWU) are some of the trade unions affiliated with COSATU.

One of South Africa’s largest trade unions believes that matric pass rate achieved by public schools as opposed to private schools reflects the inequality in the education system. They are calling for increased funding to improve education in the public sector.

 


COSATU condemns the government’s failure to pay millions of R350 grant beneficiaries their payments since April. The union requests for this matter to be fixed immediately.


In the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) for the 2021 fourth quarter, South Africa’s unemployment rate had reached its peak. Recently released statistics show a slight change for the first quarter of 2022.

 


The University of South Africa (Unisa) has found itself at the centre of protests, following an ongoing dispute. The most recent development has seen the university take the issue to court.
