Teboho Moephudi, had a chat with Careers Portal to talk about who SAICA are, their Thuthuka Bursary and why Chartered Accountants are so important in South Africa. Thuthuka bursary applications are now open for 2022.


A Chartered Accountant (CA) is a professional accountant that is qualified to work within a broad spectrum of accounting related activities. A CA is also better known as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and represented at senior management level. A CA performs various duties but their core function is to implement accounting systems and processes, preparing financial reports, controlling the information of the general ledger and submitting corporate tax returns. A CA’s main aim is to help protect various sectors of the economy by providing guidance on how to handle taxation matters. This means that they have an important role in nation building by preventing corruption, malfunctioning and detecting any fraudulent matters that occur in companies.


The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) is a professional accounting body that was established in 1984. SAICA is widely recognised and one of the leading accounting institutes. The main aim is to provide support, guidance and services to all chartered accountant’s throughout their professional lives. SAICA is responsible for monitoring the programmes that lead to the qualification of Chartered Accountants in South Africa.
