Students from the Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein have threatened protest action due to unpaid allowances from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. The university has since given its response.

Blade Nzimande, Minister of  Higher Education, Science and Technology, joined by Dr Randall Carolissen, NSFAS Administrator, sat down for a press conference at the NSFAS offices yesterday. NSFAS procedures, issues with historic debt and the ongoing issues with student accommodation were discussed and concern for student issues was shown.


UWC has had it's academic programme and campus return back to normal this week. However, aftermath of protest action and negotiations continue amongst SRC members and University Executives.


The University of the Western Cape (UWC) has students once again engaging in #UWCShutdown in pursuit of their demands. Students at the institution are protesting for debts to be cleared and for more accommodation to be provided. 


A further R1.1 billion has been allocated to build additional accommodation at 17 institutions of higher learning across the country.


All eligible students will be provided with a bursary that covers the actual cost of their tuition, plus a NSFAS determined allowance for prescribed learning materials.
