SASSA stands for South African Social Security Agency. It is a government agency in South Africa responsible for administering social grants to eligible citizens.
These grants include disability grants, old age pensions, child support grants and other forms of social assistance.
The purpose of Sassa is to provide financial support to those who are vulnerable and in need, and to help reduce poverty and inequality in South Africa.
Since its introduction in May 2020, the South African Social Security (Sassa)’s R350 grant has been in place for three consecutive cycles. However, throughout certain parts of this period, an application backlog built up resulting in beneficiaries experiencing grant payout delays.
It is important to note that appeals from April 2022 onwards are considered as new because they must be submitted on srd.dsd.gov.za rather than srd.sassa.gov.za like the earlier ones.
You can run a Sassa status check to see what the status of your grant application is.
How To Do A Sassa Status Check For Old SRD Grant Appeals
If you were an applicant of the R350 grant and submitted an appeal between May 2020 and March 2022, go to srd.sassa.gov.za to run the Sassa status check. There you should look under ‘Reconsideration status check: May 2020 to March 2022’.
You will then be asked to submit your ID number and the cellphone number you used when you applied for the grant. You will then receive a one-time pin from Sassa and you should then follow the instructions provided to track your old R350 grant appeal.
To guarantee eligibility, Sassa also verifies the applicant's Identity number to databases such as the South African Revenue Service (SARS), Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), and National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
Sassa has faced some challenges in the past, including delays in the payment of social grants, allegations of corruption and mismanagement, and difficulties in implementing a new biometric system to prevent fraud. However, the agency has taken steps to address these issues and improve its operations, such as appointing new leadership and increasing its focus on accountability and transparency.
Sassa plays an important role in providing social support to vulnerable members of society in South Africa, and ongoing efforts are being made to improve its effectiveness and efficiency.
