Will Schools Start Closing Down Again?
Schools in the Free State have been seeing a high rise in Covid-19 cases. Many schools have already been temporarily closed and as the infections rise as the days go by, more and more schools have been affected.
Free State schools are currently experiencing a surge in Covid-19 infections as the cases become more and more as the days go by.
Schools in the Free State have been allowing more children to attend school since the beginning of the term.
Over the last four days they have seen at least 100 students that have been experiencing Covid-19 symptoms.
There has already been 20 schools that have been affected by the surge in cases with four schools that have already been temporarily closed.
The Free State has already recorded over 70 positive cases of school children that have been infected with Covid-19.
Schools are worried that the current situation will delay the completion of the school syllabus.
Free State school staff member says:
We are saying to the department that the workshop they are holding for the teachers must stop for now and we have observed that the Grade 12 camps are still continuing and they are really causing the infections to rise.
The Department of Education expresses its concern and says that schools that are being affected should close to prevent the situation from getting worse.
Spokesperson for National Professional Teachers' Organisation of South Africa (NAPTOSA) says:
We are calling our members to practice safety measures at schools and outside of schools whilst we to continue to engage with the Department of Education on the best ways to handle the situation.
SABC News reported that the infections rising in schools reflect what on what is happening in society.
