Why SA Does Not Qualify To Ease Lockdown

Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize, has admitted that South Africa does not qualify to ease lockdown restrictions because of a few issues.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has set criteria that countries need to meet before they can ease lockdown restrictions.

According to the criteria by WHO, the number of cases in a country needs to decline before lockdown regulations can be eased.

This is not the case for South Africa, as the number of positive coronavirus cases has been increasing.

“We are balancing the issue of hunger, food security, job protection, the issue of the economy and the issue of constriction to social disruption. Those are the issues that have to be taken to account.”

These were the words of Minister Mkhize, speaking on the complex issues that were making it difficult for South Africa to only ease restrictions once the requirements of the WHO had been met.
