Who Has To Go To Work During The SA Lockdown?


The President has announced a national lockdown which sees majority of South Africans staying home from work. However, some are required to still go to work. Here's who's included. 

South Africa will enter a nationwide lockdown for 21-days with effect from midnight on Thursday 26 March 2020, President Cyril Ramaphosa said. The lockdown, announced in a televised address to the nation on Monday night, is part of efforts to curb the rapid spread of the Coronavirus in the country.

In his address announcing the lockdown, the President said, "This is a decisive measure to save millions of South Africans from infection and save the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.” The nation-wide lockdown is necessary to disrupt the chain of transmission across society.

Even though most South Africans will be stuck inside their homes, their are also those who have to continue as normal and continue working as they are involved in an essential service. 

Individuals who work in the following sectors still have to report to work during the lockdown:

  • People involved in the production, supply and distribution of food and basic goods, including lorry drivers and individuals involved in delivery.
  • Doctors, nurses and all medical professionals. As well as health workers in the public and private sectors
  • Banking services that are essential
  • Petrol station attendants
  • Those involved in maintaining the distribution of power, such as Eskom coal suppliers
  • Telecommunication services
  • Water services
  • People providing army and police services
  • Emergency personnel
  • Laboratory employees
  • Individuals involved in the provision and manufacturing of hygiene and medical products

Some individuals find themselves with the oppportunity to work from home and this will surely be the procedure majority of South Africans will follow.
