Western Cape's COVID-19 Testing

The Western Cape's Department of Health has made the decision to only test those who are at high risk and most vulnerable to dying from the COVID-19 infection in the Cape Town metropolitan area. However some do not agree that this is the best decision.

The Western Cape's Department of Health has made the decision to only test those who are at high risk and most vulnerable to dying from the COVID-19 infection in the Cape Town metropolitan area.

This decision has been questioned by the ANC provincial spokesperson on health, Rachel Windvogel.

Windvogel said, during the vote debate in the legislature on the Western Cape Adjustments Appropriation (COVID-19) Bill for the department, that this strategy was misleading the public into thinking that the situation was getting better.

A point was made by Windvogel that testing and screening activities were allocated more than R257.4 million and that there is "no reason to continue with this strategy, unless its purpose is to deceive the public to believe the worst is over."

She emphasized that the available budget should be used to introduce testing facilities in the wider community.

However, Health MEC Nomafrench Mbombo, said that, "the notion that the Western Cape is plateauing because we are not testing more is wrong."

“Testing is not a conclusive determinant in terms of whether our numbers are rising or falling. Hospital admissions and the numbers of deaths are the reliable indicators," added Mbombo.

The Western Cape has also spent a lot on providing PPE for their health care workers, in order to stop the spread of the virus.
