Schools And Tertiary Institutions Reopening

Schools and tertiary institutions are set to reopen during lockdown level 2, says Jackson Mthembu.

On Thursday, the cabinet welcomed the reopening of schools and the return of 66% of university students during lockdown level 2.

Technical and Vocational Education and Training college students were also welcomed back during this time. However every institution will communicate with their students about their return to campus.

According to Jackson Mthembu, the return of students to their respective campus will be done in terms of the detailed COVID-19 management plans put in place across the sector. These plans have been put in place to ensure the safety of students and tertiary institution staff.

Most learners will be joining those in Grade 7 and 12 at school on Monday 31 August. These learners include Grade 5s and Grade 8s.

The Department of Basic Education has put protocols in place to mitigate the spread of the virus.

Mthembu said that the cabinet would continue supporting Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga and Higher Education Blade Nzimande in ensuring that the 2020 academic year was saved.

It is very important for students to receive the best possible support during this pandemic to ensure that they can achieve their dreams one day.
