Vandalised Schools Raise Concerns

Schools have been the target of a number of crimes that have taken place since the beginning of the lockdown, as they have been unoccupied. This, among other things, has raised concerns about how learners will be able to return to school by the proposed date.

Since the beginning of the lockdown, 962 schools have been vandalised. Other crimes that have occurred at schools include theft, burglaries and stolen food. Umlazi has been the worst hit with 41 schools affected.

These crimes could negatively affect the phased-in return of learners to school, as learners will not have the equipment that they need.

Minister Motshekga has asked communities to take care of schools and make sure that they report any crimes.
